Apple's new iPhone 14 confirmed with new features and major game-changing upgrade

Apple has finally unveiled its iPhone 14 after a year of anticipation - and it boasts a game-changing new upgrade setting it apart from predecessors.

The tech giant is hosting its annual in-person 'Far Out' event at its Apple Park campus in California, USA, this evening to officially launch the new device as well as other gadgets in time for Christmas.

CEO Tim Cook has been on stage talking guests through each new product.

As well as the iPhone 14 itself, the rest of the 'next generation' consists of the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and Phone 14 Max or iPhone 14 Plus.

The latest handsets include an always-on display, giving users the ability to see the time and other basic notifications while the screen is locked.

The Pro version, meanwhile, features Apple’s custom-built A16 chipset.

It’s got 16billion transistors – tiny electronic switches that make computing happen – the most ever in an iPhone.

Apple says it’s the fastest chip on any smartphone in the world, claiming it is 40% faster than the competition and uses 20% less battery than the A15 from last year.

Other features in the 14's arsenal are a new advanced video stabilisation mode called Action Mode and an Emergency SOS feature which allows users to get help even while off the grid.

Apple says the phone has ”the best battery life ever in an iPhone”, and the phone comes in five colours: Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Red.

The AirPods Pro 2 were also revealed at the event.

A H2 chip delivers better sound quality which Apple claims is "transformed" with a low-distortion driver and amplifier.

They also support spatial audio so users can hear full 360-degree sound, while a new iOS 16 iPhone feature allows for the camera to scan a listener's ears to personalise the sound experience.

A single charge is said to offer six hours of listening - 33% up on the previous model.

The new Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch SE were also launched.

The Ultra is described as “specifically for exploration, adventure and endurance”.

Apple has added support for new GPS frequencies to make location tracking more accurate.

While a Waypoint feature lets users quickly add key location pinpoints using an action button.
