Apple's iPhone 14 Pro beats Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra in crucial real-world test

Battery life remains one of the most critical features for most smartphone owners. We all hate running low on juice and it appears that those who desperately need a longer-lasting device might be wise to opt for Apple over Samsung.

Both the new iPhone 14 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra promise to offer epic battery life but a test performed by the popular YouTube channel PhoneBuff has revealed that Apple's premium handset lasts the longest.

The team ran a simple test with both phones put through exactly the same set of tasks which included making calls, playing games watching videos and getting directions via map apps.

Interestingly, at the halfway point the S23 Ultra was slightly ahead with this device still having over 50% of its battery life still intact. At the same time, the iPhone 14 Pro Max had dropped to 48% power.

However, as the tests continued and the tasks got more memory intensive the iPhone began taking the lead.

In fact when the Galaxy S23 Ultra's screen turned black and shut down the iPhone still had 6% left in the tank. That was enough to keep the fun going for another 38 minutes.

It's an interesting comparison as the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a slightly larger 5,000 mAh battery - that's compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max and its 4,323 mAh power pack. It appears that Apple’s improved application optimisation and better integration between software and hardware puts it in the lead.

Phonebuff says that, despite the iPhone coming out on top, this year's test is one of the closest ever and Samsung's S23 Ultra is now much improved over older models.

Interestingly, another test performed by the team at DXO Mark actually placed the S23 Ultra above the iPhone 14 Pro Max when it comes to battery power.

The testing firm said their performance trials placed the Ultra in the top spot for premium flagships beating both the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

DXO praised Samsung's phone for having very good autonomy at nearly 67 hours in moderate use. On average, this device lasted for 2 days and 19 hours on a single charge

Here's the full list of phones and their rating according to DXO.

• Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (Snapdragon) - battery rating 142

• Asus ROG Phone 6 - battery rating 140

• Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max - battery rating 136

• Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max - battery rating 133

• Apple iPhone 14 Plus - battery rating 128
