Apple's Ios 17.4 Update Impacts EU Users' Travel Plans

Apple's new iPhone 15 officially goes on sale across China

Apple has released its latest iPhone software, iOS 17.4, which brings a host of new features. However, a surprising detail has emerged for European Union (EU) users looking to use their iPhones abroad. Due to the implementation of the Digital Markets Act, Apple has divided its iPhone software into two parts—one for EU users and another for users outside the EU.

Under the new regulations, EU iPhone owners are now able to access alternative app marketplaces, in addition to the Apple App Store. This means that apps not available on the App Store can be downloaded through these alternative platforms. Users with an EU Apple ID must set their country or region to one of the EU countries and be physically located within the EU to access these alternative marketplaces.

For EU users traveling outside the EU, Apple initially provided limited information on how the new software would function. However, Apple has since clarified that users can continue to use apps downloaded from alternative marketplaces for up to 30 days after leaving the EU. During this period, users can open, use, and update these apps. After the 30-day grace period, users will no longer receive updates for apps downloaded from alternative marketplaces.

While the 30-day period may be sufficient for most users, it could pose challenges for individuals taking extended vacations outside the EU. Notably, some European countries have lengthy summer holidays, such as the entire month of August.

Although the new regulations currently apply only to the EU, other governments may consider similar legislation for their citizens in the future. The situation is evolving, and further updates may follow as more governments assess the need for such measures.
