Police have appealed for information after a 'large' field fire broke out near Mansfield and led to homes being evacuated. Emergency services were called to Breckbank, Mansfield, at around 2.55pm today (13 August), after receiving reports of a grasslands fire.
A nearby house and a number of vehicles have been damaged because of the blaze, which is currently being brought under control by firefighters. Several homes were evacuated.
One man, named Lee Davey, recorded the incident on his YouTube channel The MacMaster. He said a caravan was on fire, as well as 'the whole field.' He added: "There's a field opposite my office, there's smoke and there's a caravan that's set on fire, the whole field is set on fire.
"There's a car in flames down there, we've got the fire brigade. This is creeping its way up the field towards my office.
"The grass is so dry because of the heatwave we're having here. This needs dampening down before it gets to the top of the field near my office.
"They're doing a great job here but they're fighting against it because there's a car in flames down there. We've been told to stand back because it could go up and explode any minute."
Road closures are in place at Barringer Road, Old Mill Lane and Ravensdale Road, in Mansfield.
Sergeant Joseph Hall, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We would urge anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information at all that could assist our enquiries to get in touch as soon as possible.
“This incident should serve as a reminder to everyone about the dangers of lighting fires in grasslands, especially in hot weather like we’re experiencing this weekend. Officers remain at the scene and are assisting fire crews from Nottinghamshire Fire and Service while they deal with the incident.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish what happened but we’d ask anyone with information to contact the police on 101, quoting incident 424 of 13 August 2022.”
There have been no reports of any injuries, police added in a statement.
