A renewed appeal has been issued by police after a pet parrot was stolen from Richmond Park and later mauled by a fox.

The male macaw, namd Sura, was taken and put into a vehicle just outside Sheen Gate on June 20 at around 8pm the, Royal Parks Police has said.

It has been reported - and confirmed by the Met - that the bird has now died.

“(The) owner is very distressed at losing her,” a police statement released on Tuesday read.

“We have spoken to a number of witnesses, but understand there may have been further persons in and around Sheen Gate who interacted with the driver of the vehicle in which Sura was taken.

“We are appealing for these people to come forward with any information they may have.”

The Royal Parks Police said that after the theft they “believe the parrot was subsequently killed by a fox” and that the investigation is ongoing.

Sura was one of a pair of free flying parrots at the park. Kasko, the mate, is said to be “very depressed” and the owner is reportedly “heartbroken”.

On Twitter, a Richmond local wrote: “I'm furious to hear of this macaw being stolen by this evil criminal. They are truly vile. How could they do something so foul? And then just leave the bird to die? I know their owner and Kasko are devastated at this loss of Sura.”

Another said they could hear Sura “screaming” but could not reach the vehicle in time. It has been reported the vehicle was an Uber car, but this has not been verified by police.

The owner has been locally named only as Kareem but was not available for further comment.

The Sun reported that the daughter of the driver claimed the bird flew inside the car by accident and was later released, although searches only found that Sura had died.
