Apocalyptic cascade of Russian incendiary bombs rains down on Ukrainian village

Apocalyptic footage shows incendiary shells raining down on a village in Ukraine targeted by Russian forces.

The terrifying cascade hit the village of Ozerne in the Donetsk region just days after it was recaptured amid Kyiv's counter-offensive, according to Ukraine.

Shells were seen striking buildings and lighting up the streets of the small village in a video shared by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

"Russian 9М22S incendiary shells falling on the recently liberated village of Ozerne in the Donetsk region," a spokesperson said.

The weapon is typically used by vehicles including the BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket systems and is designed to be used against flammable targets and personnel.

It comes as two Russian controlled areas of eastern Ukraine revealed plans to hold referendums on joining Russia later this week.

The self proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) and the nearby Donetsk People's Republic (DRR) announced the supposed referendums would take place from September 23 to 27.

It marks an escalation of Moscow's standoff with the West after Russia's battlefield reversal in the north east of Ukraine.

Addressing Putin on social media, DPR chief Denis Pushilin said: "I ask you as soon as possible, in the event of a positive decision in the referendum which we have no doubt about, to consider the DPR becoming a part of Russia."

Officials in Kherson, a region in southern Ukraine where 95 per cent is controlled by Russian forces, also confirmed plans to hold a referendum.

The announcement was made earlier on Tuesday, with pro-Russian authorities in part of the Zaporizhia region expected to follow suit.

Ukraine and the United States consider such referendums to be an illegal sham if they were to go ahead.

The countries have clearly expressed this view and say they and many other nations would not recognise the outcome.

More devastating attacks on civilians are expected by Vladimir Putin's forces as Ukraine continues to try and push forward its advance.

The Kremlin leader threatened a "more serious" response by his military if the Ukrainian counteroffensive continues.

The main aim of his campaign, he claimed, is the "liberation of the entire territory of Donbas".
