President Michel Aoun has told United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka that Beirut is committed to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 because it is willing to maintain stability and security on the southern borders.
Aoun and Wronecka discussed at Baabda Palace on Tuesday last week's Security Council consultations on the implementation of the resolution, including the international support for advancing urgent reforms.
Under the resolution, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese army is responsible for security on its side of the border in a zone from which any other armed force, including Hezbollah, is banned.
The United Nations also maintains a peacekeeping force on the border.
Resolution 1701 also required Israel to withdraw from Lebanese territory. Lebanon says that Israel has not fulfilled this because it continues to occupy a disputed area known in Lebanon as the Shebaa Farms.
During his meeting with Wronecka, Aoun stressed the importance of cooperation between UNIFIL and the Lebanese army after several incidents between UN peacekeepers and residents in southern villages.
UNIFIL troops have recently come under attacks by civilians in the South, prompting the mission to ask the Lebanese army to guarantee its safety and security.
