Antrim hurling star links up with football squad ahead of Tailteann Cup quarter-final

Antrim manager Andy McEntee has drafted in hurling star Gerard Walsh ahead of Sunday’s Tailteann Cup quarter-final clash with Carlow at Corrigan Park.

The Saffrons are three from three in the competition so far and one more victory over the Barrowsiders would see them book a trip to Dublin for next weekend’s semi-final double-header at Croke Park.

The decision to call-up Walsh, who plays both codes for Rossa, is an interesting move from the former Meath boss.

Walsh is named on the bench for Sunday's clash with the Barrowsiders, with McEntee opting to go with the same 15 that started their last game.

Antrim booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-13 to 1-12 win over Ulster rivals Fermanagh at the Box-It Athletic Grounds to top Group Four.

Indeed, Antrim have impressed in the Tailteann Cup after earlier wins over Leitrim and Wexford as well.

Their upturn in fortunes followed a difficult League campaign and a disappointing showing in a nine-point loss against Armagh in the Ulster SFC Preliminary round.

The Saffrons flirted with relegation from Division Three after throwing away leads against Down and Fermanagh while they were beaten by 31 points by Westmeath in Mullingar.

However, a surprise win over eventual Division Three champions Cavan in round six was enough to save them.

Meanwhile, the draws for the Tailteann Cup semi-finals and the Sam Maguire preliminary quarter-finals will take place on Monday on RTÉ Radio 1 after the 8.30am news.

There is a chance that a draw won’t be required for the Tailteann Cup semi-finals, depending on the outcome of this weekend’s game as teams who have already met in the group stages will be kept apart.
