Antony might have to pass up two dream shirt numbers after Manchester United transfer

Manchester United will have to undergo a rethink this summer transfer window as Darwin Nunez prepares for his move to Liverpool. Nunez had been earmarked as a target for Erik ten Hag and United after scoring a staggering 34 goals in 41 games for Benfica last season.

As part of the impending rebuild, United want to sign a centre-back, at least one central midfielder and a versatile option such as Nunez in attacking quarters. However, with him moving to Anfield in a blockbuster transfer, Ten Hag must pursue other players.

After playing a starring role for his Ajax team last season, Antony has been tipped to follow Ten Hag to Old Trafford and reports suggest United are in talks with the Amsterdam giants over a £51million move. As yet, though, there has been no confirmation or recognition from either of the parties involved.

Having scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists for Ajax in all competitions last season, Antony has United and other potential suitors on red alert. However, if he does rubber-stamp a switch to Old Trafford, the Brazilian will likely have to settle on a new shirt number.

First bursting on to the scene with hometown club Sao Paulo, the 6-cap international wore number 39 during those early days in the senior set-up, while he temporarily wore 7 before settling on 11. As things stand, though, each of his preferred numbers are assigned to United squad members.

Scott McTominay (39) and Cristiano Ronaldo (7) hold two of those numbers, while Mason Greenwood was assigned number 11 after progressing through the Academy ranks. In his two seasons at Ajax, meanwhile, Antony wore 39 and 11 to underline his two main preferences.

At full international level, the 22-year-old has donned 18 and 20; currently held by Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot at Old Trafford. Summer departures could force some players into a rethink with Fernandes hinting (more than once) he would like number 8.

Juan Mata has vacated that number this summer, so could 18 become available for Antony to take up? Other shirts up for grabs as things stand include 6, 12, 13, 14, 21, 24, 30, 32 and 35.
