Antony lifts lid on relationship with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

Manchester United star Antony has detailed his relationship with boss Erik ten Hag and explained what he is like as a manager.

The winger became United's second-most expensive signing ever in the summer upon his £85m switch from Ajax. Playing under Ten Hag, Antony lifted a number of trophies in the Netherlands, including last season’s Eredivisie title following the 2020/21 cup-and-league double campaign.

The Brazilian is a key starter for United and has netted seven times since his move, including important goals against Arsenal, Everton and Barcelona. Speaking to club media, the 23-year-old detailed the impact Ten Hag has had on him both at United and beyond.

He said: “Of course, he [Ten Hag] helps me out a great deal. He’s always open for a chat and demands a lot from you as well and I always listen to what he has to say with the aim of getting the team results and helping him.”

The duo have already won their first piece of silverware at United after lifting the Carabao Cup at Wembley in February. Along with fellow summer Ajax recruit Lisandro Martinez, the pair re-enacted a celebratory post-match dance on the pitch that was first seen during their successes in Amsterdam.

When asked about this, Antony explained: “I’ve got a great relationship with him. We celebrated that important trophy win together - me, him and Lisandro Martinez. It’s something we’d already done in Amsterdam after winning trophies. Martinez called him over for a dance and he got stuck in.”

Antony paid tribute to the United fans for their influence on the team’s performances this season and described what it is like to play in front of a packed Old Trafford. “I always say to my friends and family that the fans are amazing, all 73,000 of them,” he said.

“Manchester United aren’t any ordinary club or ordinary team, not every fanbase is like this. Like I’ve said, the atmosphere they create is like fuel to keep us going.”
