Antony axed from Ajax matchday squad amid reports he is striking to force Manchester United transfer

Antony has been left out of Ajax's matchday squad for Sunday lunchtime's clash with Sparta Rotterdam amid reports he has gone on strike at the club in a bid to force a move to Manchester United.

The winger, who joined the Dutch club from Sao Paulo in 2020, has not been named in either the starting line-up or on the substitutes bench as Ajax go in search of a third successive Eredivisie victory. He is reported to have also missed training on Friday and Saturday.

United, who are on the cusp of completing the signing of Casemiro from Real Madrid, were heavily interested in signing Antony at the start of the transfer window, but their interest cooled after Ajax slapped an eye-watering price tag on his head. However, the Reds have rekindled their interest over the past week or so and reports in the Netherlands suggested that recently saw an €80million bid for his services rejected.

The Reds remain determined to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the transfer window closing in just under a fortnight's time. Signing a new right-winger has been a leading priority for Erik ten Hag throughout the summer and Antony was always considered as his top target.

The 22-year-old, who has scored one goal and recorded two assists in just two Eredivisie appearances so far this season, is reportedly working alongside his representatives to try and convince Ajax to negotiate a move to United.

Last week, the Brazilian addressed his future and refused to rule out the prospect of leaving Ajax before the window closes.

He said: "Will Ten Hag call me? No idea. He has to discuss this with my agents, I’m focused on here. What will come will come, we will see. I feel good at Ajax. I give everything for this club, every minute. So I am loving this city and this club."
