Antonio Rudiger's Edouard Mendy row forgotten as Christian Pulisic helps Chelsea quieten Lille

Chelsea are through to the Champions League quarter-final, but at moments it was certainly more nervous than they might have liked. Andreas Christensen was forced off with an injury in the first half, while Jorginho's handball gave Lille the opportunity to score from the spot. Burak Yilmaz dutifully obliged.

The Blues managed plenty of possession in the first period but little in the way of control and could not trouble Lille's final third with any real kind of threat. Jorginho managed to find a touch of class on the verge of half time to feed a pass to Christian Pulisic on the right side of the box. The American showed some great finishing ability to prompt a collective sigh of relief from Chelsea supporters the world over.

Lille kept going in the second period but Chelsea will able to find a little bit more success and Mason Mount's delicious cross from the left, found Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spaniard was able to guide the ball into the net with his knee on the six-yard line to make things feel secure and the west London side were able to secure their progression.

football.london took a look at the moments you might have missed:

Early frustrations

In a 3-5-2 formation the Blues could not settle against their French counterparts in the opening half. Lille's press was relentless and Chelsea struggled to put any meaningful passes together for much of the period, with the edge of needing to secure qualification possibly tolling on the players.

Even Antonio Rudiger, a man who looks to have supreme mentality as well eccentricities, did not look as natural as usual with red shirts swarming. Thomas Tuchel even had to take a moment to tell the German international to calm down in possession.

Not many minutes passed before the defender was then involved with Edouard Mendy, with some cross words passed after the goalkeeper did not come to claim the ball. It was a brief moment of course, but telling of the pressure the Blues were being put under in the first half.

The PA joining in with supporters

It was tough for Chelsea first half. Lille's press only encouraged the incredible atmosphere on show at Stade Pierre Mauroy. From the tifos, to the scarves and the very loud voices, it's no wonder the French champions felt energised to put the Blues under pressure.

Yilmaz's penalty saw the stadium on the verge of explosion for the rest of the half to the extent the stadium's PA couldn't help but join in with the singing as we headed into the break.

His enthusiasm grew but then Jorginho found plenty of time on the ball in Lille's half. The Italian had enough time to calculate the perfect pass for Pulisic, who emphatically shut the crowd up.

We didn't hear much from the PA after that.

Cesar Azpilicueta's breather

He may be 32 and in the final year of his Chelsea contract but Cesar Azpilicueta is relentless. His work-rate down the right wing was exceptional, and a clever or fortuitous finish with his knee certainly capped his evening off very nicely.

What might be most memorable was his 40-yard run to go and defend near the corner flag inside the Lille half. You almost want him to conserve his energy but the Blues captain set the tone and ensured his presence was felt. Gabriel Gudmundsson certainly felt it as Azpilicueta came into his back.

Chelsea attacked shortly afterwards but that was one moment where Azpilicueta took pause. He was left haunched over trying to recover from his entertaining exertion.
