Antonio Rudiger makes major Chelsea and Man Utd decision as £31m transfer slammed as ‘mistake’

Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has said that Antonio Rudiger would be making a ‘mistake’ should he choose to move to Newcastle United. The German defender is out of contract at the end of the season and is now able to negotiate a free transfer elsewhere.

A number of clubs appear to be in the race for the former Roma man’s services including Manchester United, Juventus and Real Madrid. Another surprise contender appears to be Newcastle United, who are reportedly set to make an effort to sign Rudiger with their new-found riches.

It of course remains to be seen where the German defender will end up if he elects to leave Chelsea but one man who would not be a fan of a switch to St James’ Park is ex-Blues defender Johnson.

Speaking in an interview with BettingOdds.com, he said: “Yes, I do think it [moving to Newcastle] would be a mistake. Without being disrespectful, there’d be only one reason why Antonio Rüdiger would be going to Newcastle.

“I think he’s still got a lot to offer. If you’re still fighting for titles and going deep in most competitions, why would you look to leave? He’s obviously earning good money now. That’ll continue. No, if he goes to Newcastle right now it’d be for the wrong reasons.”

Rudiger still has a few months to make a decision on where his future lies and he appears to be biding his time before rushing into a move away. According to Sky Italia, the centre-back is open to a return to Italy with Juventus but is waiting to see if he is given a fresh offer by Chelsea’s new owners.

The Blues are currently embroiled in uncertainty regarding their takeover. A number of bids are understood to have been lodged, although it remains to be seen which, if any, will be successful. It goes without saying though that Rudiger will be keeping a close eye on developments as he attempts to reach a decision over his future - whether that involves Newcastle United or not.
