Antonio Conte 'would love' to re-sign Jose Mourinho £30million transfer mistake this summer

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Antonio Conte 'would love' to re-sign Kyle Walker-Peters this summer.

Spurs have strengthened significantly ahead of the 2022/23 season after welcoming five new signings so far in the summer transfer window. Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster and Clement Lenglet have all joined the club, and football.london understands the Lilywhites are keen to two or three more players to Conte's squad before the transfer deadline.

Jose Mourinho sold Walker-Peters to Southampton during his tenure as Tottenham boss with the 25-year-old now attracting interest from Arsenal and Manchester United. Spurs inserted a £30million 'buy-back' clause into the English defender's deal to join the Saints, as per The Athletic, and Robinson believes Conte should take advantage of that this summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson insists the 25-year-old has “really improved” since leaving the London club in 2020. The former Spurs' goalkeeper said: "He left Spurs in a similar way and a similar time to Kyle Walker – and they’ve really kicked on now and gone to new heights. You’d have to say that Walker-Peters is a player that Conte would love to have back in his ranks now.”

football.london understands Spurs are currently in talks to sign Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence this summer, despite the clubs still yet to agree a fee for the 21-year-old. Walker-Peters could be viewed as a potential alternative to Spence should the club fail in their pursuit of the right-back.

Conte has clearly wanted to improve Spurs' backline this summer with the arrivals of Lenglet and Perisic set to bolster the left side of the defence. The Lilywhites are currently out in South Korea for their pre-season tour, with their first game set to be played on Wednesday when they face Team K League.

Walker-Peters has made a total of 82 appearances for the Saints, scoring twice and registering seven assists in that time playing predominantly as a right-back. In Conte's system, the 25-year-old would be given license to drive forward more often and contribute to attacking phases of play on a regular basis, whilst providing defensive cover when required.

It remains to be seen whether the club will act on the £30million buy-back clause in Walker-Peters' contract as Spurs continue to negotiate with Middlesbrough over a deal for Spence.
