Antonio Conte pleased with Tottenham’s “great improvement” despite inconsistent form

Antonio Conte credited the “great improvement” of his Tottenham Hotspur side in creating and taking chances, following Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Brighton.

Goals from Cristian Romero and Harry Kane sealed the win for Spurs on the south coast, as they closed the gap on fourth-placed Arsenal to just three points. Those two goals meant that Spurs have now hit the back of the net 16 times in their last six Premier League outings.

And after seeing his side bounce back from their disappointing weekend loss to Manchester United, Conte believed his side deserved credit. He said: “The team put in a very good performance, the last period I am seeing great improvement. I said before this game that in the last five games we scored a lot of goals, five against Everton, four against Leeds away, three at Manchester City, two goals against Manchester United and also two here.

“We created many chances to also improve the final result. It means we are improving and we are trying to go in another step to try to be very close to the top of the table. It is right to have ambition and I put ambition to my players because it is important to have a target, a difficult target for sure because to reach the fourth place is not simple, it will be very difficult.

“We are showing great improvement and this is good for the present and the future. On Sunday we will have a crucial game against West Ham. To get three points on Sunday will be very important to continue to have a hope to reach fourth place.

If Tottenham don’t finish in the top four this season, what position will they end up in? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Tottenham's biggest problem of late, amid their goal glut, has been inconsistency Following their remarkable 3-2 defeat at Manchester City, they lost to Burnley. After beating Leeds United 4-0, they crashed out of the FA Cup at Middlesbrough. And following their 5-0 thrashing of Everton, they lost a crucial game at Old Trafford.

A huge fixture at home to West Ham on Sunday awaits, with the Hammers just a place above Spurs on goal difference. A victory over David Moyes’ side would be a real statement win as Conte continues his side's top four push.
