Antonio Conte issues promise to Harry Kane after equalling Tottenham goals record

Antonio Conte last night promised to help Harry Kane win trophies to go with his goalscoring records.

Kane drew level with club legend Jimmy Greaves on 266 goals with a winner in first half injury time which was also his 199th Premier League goal in his career.

Tottenham striker Kane admitted that he should have also broken the record with a second half header but Conte insisted that they should also be “dreaming” of lifting silverware.

Spurs boss Conte said: “We are talking about a player that has a fantastic ability and good experience. For sure, I would like to help him and his teammates to do something important, to win something with Tottenham because he loves Tottenham in his heart.

“And it should be good if together we were able to win something. It’s important to have this record but it could be more important if he could have a trophy. We have to be dreamers.”

Conte also revealed that he held a heart-to-heart meeting with the Tottenham players after their defeat at Manchester City last week and believes the win at Fulham could herald a revival.

“I spoke to the players and said today has to be a starting point for us,” said Conte. “Many times after the defeats you can learn more than when you win.

“Against Man City and Arsenal it was important to reflect and understand that maybe we lost something compared to last season. My expectation is to be competitive and make our fans proud of our team.”

England captain Kane admitted his pride at the record - but was still regretting a missed second half chance.

He said: “I’ve been playing football long enough now to know where the goal is, that’s just instinct and the joy of scoring goals.

“I should have scored another really, I could maybe have volleyed it but in the moment I thought the header was a better option.

“Hopefully we can use the victory today to get a bit of momentum. Clean sheets are really important to us, we just had to go back to what got us into the Champions League last year.

“We do a lot of fitness work for sure, last season we came really strong towards he end of the season.”
