Antonio Conte has discovered his new 'phenomenal' Tottenham undroppable after Brighton win

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has described Cristian Romero as "phenomenal" following his performance against Brighton.

The 23-year-old defender, who was signed by Spurs from Atalanta last summer, made his first appearance in almost four months on Saturday evening after suffering a serious hamstring injury while on international duty with Argentina in November.

Romero's long-awaited return massively pleased Tottenham supporters - and would have done the same for Antonio Conte, who has hardly had the opportunity to work with the Argentine during his time at Spurs.

Now, Robinson, when speaking to Football Insider, has lauded Romero for his display in the FA Cup fourth round victory at the weekend and is excited by what he saw from the defender.

"His performance [on Saturday] proved that he is the best centre-half at the club," the former Spurs goalkeeper claimed.

"I think they probably tried to get one in during the window but it did not work out. But in Romero, they have got a phenomenal defender. He makes others around him better.

"What they have got is not enough. They need more but he is certainly the best that they have got. He could play in any side in the top four of the Premier League. He is a Champions League player, a top player.

"If Spurs are going to go places, Romero is the type of play they will need to keep and build around."

Romero settling in at Spurs

Back during an interview with Sky Sports in October of last year, Romero spoke about how he is slowly settling into life in England after transferring from Italy.

He said: "Slowly but surely, I'm feeling more at home here. It's not something that would happen overnight and every change of environment requires a period of adapting. I'm feeling good at the moment and hopefully I can continue playing at this level."

Romero will be hopeful he can stay fit for a lengthy spell now so he can prove Robinson right and establish himself as one of the strongest central defenders in the Premier League.
