Antonio Conte has been given a one game touchline ban - and is sweating on further punishment from UEFA.
Conte had a meltdown after Harry Kane was denied a last gasp winner by VAR and was shown a red card before questioning the officials’ honesty and integrity by suggesting other clubs would not have been penalised.
Conte will not be on the touchline for his club’s make-or-break Champions League showdown with Marseille next Tuesday and, while he will be allowed in the stadium, he cannot enter the dressing room, be in the technical area or communicate directly with his players. But UEFA are also waiting on referee Danny Makkelie’s report before deciding whether to take the matter further.
Conte would almost certainly get charged in the Premier League if he questioned any sort of bias from the ref while Spurs are believed to be concerned over his comments about the “honesty” of the officials.
Tottenham boss Conte refused to accept the decision, launched a scathing attack after the game even though TV replays showed it was offside. His coaching staff are believed to have spoken to him afterwards to explain the reasoning.
The UEFA rules state on the touchline ban ahead of next week: “A team manager/coach or other team official who is sent off or suspended from carrying out his function may not be in the technical area or communicate directly with the team's players.
“In addition, a team manager/coach or any other team official who is suspended from carrying out his function may not enter the dressing room or tunnel before or during the match.”
During his short press conference, Conte accused VAR of being dishonest, creating "big damage" and insisted it would not have disallowed Kane's goal had it been for a "top team, in an important game" before he walked out after one question.
"I would like to see if this type of decision you can take with a top team, in an important game, yeah I would like to see if VAR is so brave to take this decision," he seethed. "I repeat this unfair decision because the ball is in front of Kane.
"Sorry, but I am really upset because sometimes you can accept this situation and sometimes I think it is not good because I don't see honesty in this type of situation and when I see this I become really, really upset."
Conte added: "I hope the club understands this and then in the right situation they also speak with the people they have to speak because otherwise it is only the manager to speak. I think the club has to be strong because I repeat this situation creates big, big damage. Now we don't know what happen next week. If we go out, then I want to see."
