Following a statement victory against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, Tottenham suffered a hammer blow on Wednesday night in their pursuit of a top-four finish, losing 1-0 at Burnley.
It was another game in which the north Londoners failed to deliver when the onus was on them to take the initiative, with Sean Dyche's men showing resilience and incredible character to nullify Spurs from creating clear cut opportunities.
To add more salt into the wounds, centre back Ben Mee delivered a sucker punch in the 71st minute with a towering header at the back post, with the Englishman's goal proving to be the difference between the two sides.
The defeat left manager Antonio Conte questioning whether he can take the current Spurs team forward in what was a very emotional post-match interview.
"I came in to try to improve the situation in Tottenham but maybe in this moment, I don’t know, I’m not so good to improve the situation," the 52-year-old said.
"I’m really frustrated and I’m not used to being faced with this type of situation.
"I’m trying to do everything to change the situation but the situation is not changing."
The interpretation of these comments suggests that the Italian tactician could walk away from the job very soon, with former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given sharing similar thoughts, arguing that Manchester United need a "character like him".
"My concern is, has he got something else lined up?" Given said to talkSPORT
"For a manager that’s reportedly on £15m a year, which is a massive contract, he looks like he wants to walk away from this to be honest with you.
"Maybe, just maybe, someone from the red side of Manchester will be in contact with him because it feels like Man United need a character like him that’s really strong to sort that dressing room out."
With current coach Ralf Ragnick moving into a two-year consultancy role at the club once the current season is completed, the Red Devils will be on the lookout for a new manager and perhaps they could be tempted into making a move for the former Inter Milan manager.
The focus for Conte in the meantime, however, will be on tomorrow afternoon's lunchtime kick-off at Elland Road against Leeds United, and with fellow rivals, Arsenal clinching a win at home to Wolves yesterday evening, Spurs really can't afford any more major slip-ups.
