Antonio Conte should have a fairly simple task on his hands when it comes to naming Tottenham's Champions League squad for the knockout phase. Returning to European action in 13 days' time away at AC Milan, those involved in UEFA competition must submit their 25-man squads very soon.
An area Tottenham have had issues in before due to their large number of non-homegrown players, thankfully the Lilywhites have avoided the problem once again due to their January transfer dealings. Strengthening their squad for the second part of the campaign with Pedro Porro and Arnaut Danjuma joining from Sporting CP and Villarreal respectively, a couple of players also moved on from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of Tuesday's 11pm transfer deadline.
Bryan Gil was one of those after returning to Sevilla on a loan deal on Monday, with Djed Spence and Matt Doherty also heading out of the exit door on deadline day. Doherty's switch to Atletico Madrid, which was initially expected to be a loan deal before it was confirmed that his contract had been mutually terminated, has helped Spurs out in terms of their non-homegrown numbers when it comes to the Champions League.

Deemed as a homegrown player in the Premier League, the right wing-back is classed as non-homegrown by UEFA after coming through the system in Ireland. That in turn means that Porro, who would have taken Tottenham one over the limit of 17 following his move, can take his place in the non-homegrown player section and Spurs do not have to drop another player as what looked like would be the case before news of Doherty's move to Spain broke.
One over the limit last week following Danjuma's loan move from Villarreal, Gil's return to Spain will result in the Netherlands international taking his place in the Tottenham squad for the knockout phase of the competition. Following the conclusion of the January transfer window, the next job for Conte will be to submit their Champions League squad to UEFA, with the deadline on Thursday evening.
Per UEFA, the ruling regarding player registration states: 'As of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 2 February 2023 (24.00CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.
'Any or all of the players from the above quota of three may have been fielded for another club in the qualifying phase, play-offs or group stage of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League.'
