Antonio Conte already knows Tottenham issue he must fix for game-changing Chelsea idea to thrive

One of the key components in an Antonio Conte side is getting plenty of joy from the wide positions.

Appointed as Chelsea head coach ahead of the 2016/17 season, a 3-0 defeat against Arsenal just over a month into his reign saw him switch to playing a 3-4-3 system as he looked to get the Blues up and running.

The change worked wonders as they went on to win their next 13 Premier League fixtures to put them on course to winning the league title come May.

Blessed with an excellent attack with Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Pedro in the frontline, Conte also had the likes of Cesc Fabregas and N'Golo Kante working their magic in the engine room.

What also helped Chelsea clinch their fifth Premier League title was the contribution of both Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses from either flank in their wing-back roles.

An ideal position for the Spaniard because of his attacking nature, the decision to play Moses, who had spent the previous three seasons away from Chelsea on loan, at right wing-back proved to be a masterstroke as he had all the elements in his game to be a major success there.

In the 2016/17 campaign Alonso chipped in with six goals and three assists from his 37 games in all competitions from left wing-back, with Moses registering four goals and four assists from the opposite flank in his 40 games.

Keeping faith with his setup at Inter Milan by either playing with a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 system, Conte has mainly used the former since taking on the Tottenham hotseat in November.

Whereas previously his players at wing-back were posting rather impressive numbers, including Achraf Hakimi's eye-catching seven goal and 11 assists for Inter Milan in 2020/21, the same unfortunately cannot be said about his time in N17 so far.

Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilon have been his preferred wing-backs since November, with Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon getting the odd game here and there when his first-choice players have missed out on selection.

However, his regular starters have so far contributed one goal and two assists between them in that timeframe.

Emerson has yet to find the net in his Tottenham career, although he may want to claim Solly March's recent own goal in the Brighton & Hove Albion cup game as his own following his run and cross, and has only contributed one assist which came against Crystal Palace in December.

Reguilon, on the other hand, scored the winner against Leeds and assisted Son Heung-min's goal against Brentford, with his other two assists this term coming during Nuno Espirito Santo's spell as boss.

Both have the attacking qualities to be successes as wing-backs but the fact of the matter is that they need time to truly find their stride in the position having played very little there in the past.

One concerning aspect of their game is that they have struggled to find Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura with their crosses on a regular basis.

As per Kickest, Reguilon has been successful with 24 of his 68 attempted crosses in the Premier League this season compared to Emerson's 11 from 52.

Their lack of goals between them can also be put down to their lack of attempted efforts on goal across a game, with WhoScored having Emerson down as having 0.3 shots per game and Reguilon faring slightly better at 0.7.

In comparison to the Tottenham duo, Moses was having 1.3 per game in the 2016/17 Premier League season under Conte and Alonso was slightly higher at 1.5.

However, Reguilon and Emerson's key passes per 90 are slightly higher having recorded 1.2 and 1 per game respectively compared to the 0.8 the Chelsea duo achieved in Conte's first year.

Conte's wing-backs were also very similar in terms of dribbles per game with Alonso 0.7, Reguilon 0.8 and Emerson 0.6, but it was Moses who came out on top by some way at 1.6.

While Moses chipped in with another four goals and four assists the following season, Alonso went on to record eight goals and four assists in 2017/18 in Conte's final year in charge.

As thing stand with 16 games left in the Premier League this term, Emerson and Reguilon have an awful lot to do if they are to get anywhere near those numbers.

The Tottenham duo's statistics could drastically improve next season having had more experience playing as wing-backs but it is a position the head coach could look to upgrade as he looks for similar success out wide that saw his Chelsea and Inter Milan sides win silverware.

Relying too much on Kane and Son to get the goals for Tottenham, Conte quite simply needs so much more from Reguilon and Emerson if his Spurs system is to truly flourish.
