Antiques Roadshow guest shocked to discover pricey truth behind her 'costume jewellery'

An Antiques Roadshow guest was shocked to learn the true value of her necklace which she described as "costume jewellery".

The woman had brought the necklace in for expert Judith Miller to look at on the BBC show. She was left stunned when it was revealed her item could easily make more than 20 times the amount she had bought it for.

The green and gold necklace was made up of square jewels and featured a large rectangular pendant.

Judith's face lit up when she saw the object and said: "I love costume jewellery, I always have done."

The guest revealed she had bought the necklace many years ago in an Australian antique shop.

Speaking about why she bought the item, she said: "It's simplicity, it's colour - it really just appealed. I really just loved it straight away."

The guest said she had started her first ever job at the age of 16 just before buying it and decided to treat herself when she got her first pay check.

She paid just $30 Australian dollars for the beautiful piece, which works out at around £17.

Judith then revealed that it was actually "really high quality" costume jewellery and was "incredibly well made."

She said: "It's really, really high quality costume jewellery.

"Costume jewellery comes in all sorts of levels. There's very cheap costume jewellery, there's extremely expensive costume jewellery and this is incredibly well made. It's beautifully designed."

The expert continued to say that she thought the necklace was French and definitely made in the 1950s.

She added: "Just looking at the quality of it, it makes me think it was made for a couture collection and you just don't get this detail on every piece of costume jewellery."

Judith loved the necklace (BBC)

Judith described it as a "pretty good buy" and left the guest speechless when she made her valuation. She estimated the piece to be worth £400 to £500.

Speaking after hearing the news, the guest said: "I'm absolutely blown away, I'm just so impressed.

"I mean I was 16, had absolutely not idea what I was doing, bought something I loved and it's amazing to hear that it's actually worth something.

"Go with your gut, buy things that you love."
