Antiques Road Trip item 'worth £80' sells for so much less

An item on Antiques Road Trip estimated to sell for as much as £80 didn't make anywhere near that much at auction.

Presenter Charles Hanson was left gutted when an early 19th century Masons Cider Mug he bought barely made a profit. While it was priced at £22 in a local antiques store, the host was convinced it was worth far more than that.

He also chose a set of plates priced at £9, and a glass jug with an £8 tag, and decided not to bother haggling with the shop owner as he was so convinced he'd found a "hattrick of lots".

But when it came to the auction, Charles was left disappointed. As bids failed to come in, an upset Charles yelled: "Oh Raj!", and the mug from 1810 sold for just £30, a profit of £8, and a huge £50 less than predicted.

The auction wasn't over yet, though, and luckily for Charles his £8 jug sold for a whopping £50. Meanwhile the set of plates sold for £21.

At the end of the show, Charles had £577.16 in his "piggy bank", while his co-host Raj Bisram had just £232.82, and there is just one episode left before the winner is declared.

Antiques Road Trip airs weekdays at 3.45pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
