Anti-social behaviour down as Nottingham alleyways blocked

People could be banned from using several Nottingham alleyways for a further three years amid fears of a "recurrence" of anti-social behaviour. Access to eleven alleyways has been prohibited for the last three years after an order was made by Nottingham City Council.

All eleven of these orders are due to expire towards the end of this year and the council will now consult on extending them. In council documents, the authority says: "Since the orders were made there has been a significant reduction in the anti-social behaviour reported in the locality of the respective areas.

"However, if the orders are allowed to expire, which would result in the above mentioned barriers being removed, this may result in the recurrence of the identified anti-social behaviour in these locations." The orders made are known as Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs), a tool available to councils under 2014 legislation.

Guidance from the Local Government Association on how they should be used reads: "Used proportionately and in the right circumstances, PSPOs allow local areas to counter unreasonable and persistent behaviour that affects the quality of life of its residents. They can send a clear message that certain behaviours will not be tolerated, and help reassure residents that unreasonable conduct is being addressed."

The areas covered in Nottingham by the current PSPOs, all expiring in either October or November, include parts of St Ann's and Mapperley. The council has now authorised a 28-day consultation to be held on extending the orders, with the new ones coming into effect following the expiry of the current ones if the council decides to go ahead. Below are all the alleyways affected and where access is currently restricted.
