Protesters are gathering outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where a significant number of anti-Israel demonstrators are expected to voice their objections throughout the week. The convention, set to kick off at the United Center near the West Side, is anticipated to draw as many as 100,000 protesters.
On the eve of the convention, several large demonstrations took place on various issues, including abortion and opposition to U.S. support for Israel. To maintain order, the city has fenced off the convention center and deployed a heavy police presence in the area. Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois has confirmed that approximately 150 National Guard members are on standby for the event.
Businesses in the vicinity have taken precautions by boarding up their doors in anticipation of potential unrest. Over 300 police officers participated in a training session led by Police Superintendent Larry Snelling to prepare for the convention.
President Joe Biden is scheduled to deliver an opening night address on Monday evening, passing the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris. The convention, during which Harris will formally accept the Democratic nomination, is slated to run from August 19 to 22.
