Anti-Boris Johnson banner flown above Elland Road ahead of Leeds United vs Newcastle clash

A message against the UK's Prime Minister, Boris Johnson was flown above Elland Road this afternoon ahead of the kick-off of Leeds United and Newcastle United.

Public opinion of Johnson is at a low point following multiple controversies around Downing Street parties in the midst of a national lockdown.

The message read, 'Boot him out' and included the web address stopboris.com.

It's unclear why the banner was flown over this match in particular, although some of Boris Johnson's children are said to be fans of Leeds' opponents on the day.

The match provides an opportunity for Leeds to pull further clear from the relegation zone and even to increase their gap ahead of 16th place Everton, who lost 1-0 to Aston Villa earlier today.

After a disappointing December, the Whites have started 2022 with two league wins. Marcelo Bielsa's side beat Burnley 3-1 in their last home game at the start of the month, before a Jack Harrison hat-trick brought them a 3-2 victory against West Ham at the London Stadium last weekend. A win against the Magpies would give them their first run of three consecutive wins of the season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are desperate to escape the relegation zone as they sit ten points behind the Whites in 19th place in the Premier League. Much of their January has been spent in pursuit of new recruits for Eddie Howe to call on, although they have had a frustrating time getting their targets over the line. Whilst Leeds will be hungry for the win, the three points are essential for Newcastle if they want to climb the table.
