Anthony Taylor named as referee for Liverpool clash with Man City

Anthony Taylor will referee this weekend's Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield.

Manchester-born Taylor oversaw the Premier League meeting between the two sides at the Etihad back in April, where Jurgen Klopp's side could only manage a draw for their efforts in East Manchester as they failed to close the gap to Pep Guardiola's side.

The 43-year took charge of the Reds' fixtures five times over the course of the 2021/22 season, including the 5-0 drubbing of old foes Manchester United at Old Trafford last October. His most recent game involving Klopp's side came during September's 0-0 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Elsewhere, Michael Oliver has not been selected to officiate in the Premier League this weekend and will instead uptake Video Assistant Referee duties for Arsenal's visit to Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

While overseeing last Sunday's game against the Reds, Oliver's counterpart Eddie Smart caused controversy while on VAR duty as he failed to award a penalty to the dismay of Jurgen Klopp when Diogo jota's cross struck the end of Gunners defender Gabriel. There was also debate as to whether there was enough contact between Thiago Alcantara and Gabriel Jesus to warrant a penalty, which Bukayo Saka converted and subsequently handed Arsenal a huge three points.

However, Liverpool are unbeaten in the last eight games Taylor has officiated, with their last defeat coming in February 2021 away to Leicester City.
