Aberdeen captain Anthony Stewart has revealed the person who racially abused him has since tried to reach out to him.
The culprit has attempted to get in touch but Stewart has no interest in speaking to him. Stewart took to social media after he was racially abused following his red card during the Scottish Premiership clash with St Mirren to highlight the ugly attack. The skipper confirmed: “Not as yet. I haven’t been in contact with him. To be fair, he did message me on social media but I have refused to reply. What is done is done and there is no need for me and him to speak, so I didn’t speak to him.”
The Londoner has been a professional footballer for 11 years and he has admitted it is the first time he has been faced with such an issue, but has been delighted with the backing he has received from everybody at Aberdeen. Stewart insisted: “It is the first time. I can’t fault uneducated people but the club took it into their own hands and dealt with it correctly, so I am happy with that.
“It is the first time I have had to deal with it. I wouldn’t say it knocked me, although it did give me a perspective. At the same time, the support from the club has been excellent and as far as I am concerned it has been dealt with.”
Stewart has insisted what has happened won’t force him off social media because it can also do a lot of good. He claimed: “Don’t get me wrong, I am not too sucked into social media.
"I pick and choose when I want to be on it and when I don’t want to be on it. I don’t always read comments or interact fully on it.
“It is just about people understanding me a bit more. Whether you do or not is up to you.”
Manager Jim Goodwin has insisted there is no place for racism in football and the club won’t have to deal with any future issues on that front. Goodwin said: “I am disappointed with what happened but Anthony has been really good about it.
"The club has been extremely supportive of Anthony as well. I think the statement was exactly what was required and there is no place for racism and discrimination of any kind in society or in football.
"Anthony has the full support of everyone here. Hopefully we will have no more of that going forward.”
