Anthony Martial injury could thwart Erik ten Hag's summer transfer plans at Man Utd

Erik ten Hag's plans to bring in a new striker this summer have been hampered by a long term injury to Anthony Martial.

The French striker has endured another frustrating season at Old Trafford, struggling for fitness with a hip problem before returning to the first team frame in April. Despite scoring in a win over Wolves in the run-in, he failed to impress before suffering another blow on the final day.

He played the final 25 minutes of United's 2-1 win over Fulham, only to be later diagnosed with a muscle tear in what was deemed his final Premier League appearance for the club. The issue will rule him out of Saturday's FA Cup final with the Red Devils facing treble chasing Man City at Wembley.

The Dutch boss was planning to sell Martial this summer, in order to free up space in his squad for new arrivals. The club's pursuit of a proven goalscorer has intensified of late, with Ten Hag targeting Tottenham's Harry Kane and Napoli's Victor Osimhen also being pursued.

United have also held talks with Atalanta star Rasmus Hojlund, who has plundered 15 goals in 41 games for his club this season. The agency which represents Ten Hag, SEG, have also brokered a deal with the Dane, a development which could boost Ten Hag's hopes of snaring the 20-year-old.

But offloading Martial, who was signed by Louis van Gaal back in 2015, has now been complicated by his latest lay-off. Juventus were reportedly tracking the former Monaco man, but are now unlikely to offer to him a permanent deal with no guarantee he'll be ready for the start of the 2023-24 season.

Martial, 27, has not completed 90 minutes in the league for United since January 2021, and has scored just 17 goals in all competitions for the club in three seasons. His return to the club last summer was considered a surprise, having been shipped out on loan to Sevilla in January.

He has made 29 appearances in United colours in this campaign, albeit the majority off the bench. And he's struck just nine times having been outshone by Marcus Rashford and new signing Antony.

His initial £36 million fee eight years ago represented the highest ever for a teenager, and has since risen to £44.7 million due to clauses. Martial has also won 30 caps for France, but has not represented the national side for almost two years.
