Anthony Mackie is stepping into a new role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sam Wilson in the upcoming film Captain America: New World Order. This movie is set to be a grounded political thriller reminiscent of the 2014 hit Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Mackie has been portraying Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon, since his debut in Winter Soldier, where he was introduced as an ally of Captain America, played by Chris Evans.
Following his initial appearance, Mackie reprised his role in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and various Avengers films before taking the lead in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The show followed Sam's evolution into Captain America, setting the stage for his upcoming portrayal in New World Order.
The film is directed by Julius Onah, known for The Cloverfield Paradox, with a script penned by Malcom Spellman and Dalan Musson, the creators of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Matthew Orton, the writer behind Moon Knight, is also contributing to the script, particularly for reshoots that will introduce a new character portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito.
Notable additions to the cast include Harrison Ford, making his Marvel debut as General Ross, a character previously portrayed by the late William Hurt. Ford's character aims to recruit Captain America for an official military role as he pursues a presidential campaign. Shira Haas, a newcomer to the MCU, is also part of the ensemble cast.
Returning to the Marvel universe are Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson, who were last seen in 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Additionally, Danny Ramirez reprises his role as Joaquin Torres from Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a character who eventually takes on the mantle of The Falcon in the comics.
The release of the trailer precedes Marvel Studios' upcoming movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, and is timed ahead of the highly anticipated San Diego Comic-Con, where fans can expect a glimpse of Marvel's future projects.
