Although it hasn’t been too long since his shock defeat to Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium, boxing fans are already talking about Anthony Joshua’s next fight and who they want to see ‘AJ’ return to the ring against this year.
Anthony Joshua‘s last fight saw him knocked out in Round 5 of his heavyweight world title fight against ‘DDD’ in front of 98,128 startled spectators, with AJ’s next fight now a hot topic of conversation in the aftermath.
Many fans have called for Joshua to even call time on his career, given that he suffered a devastating knockout to Dubois and can sail off into the sunset with hundreds of millions in the bank and his legacy in tact.
However, it is evident Anthony Joshua himself has other ideas and retirement certainly isn’t one of them. Whether or not Joshua fights Dubois again in his next fight remains to be seen.
Since then it has been confirmed that Daniel Dubois will defend his IBF World Heavyweight Title against Joseph Parker on February 22nd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This means that if he is to fight Dubois next, ‘AJ’ will have to wait until the summer of 2025.
Promoter Eddie Hearn has plans for ‘AJ’ this year and beyond, insisting that he has plenty of other options in the heavyweight division. These include fighting the Dubois vs Parker winner, the Zhilei Zhang vs Agit Kabayel winner, Martin Bakole, Deontay Wilder or even Tyson Fury if he comes out of retirement.
Time will tell what happens next for the former two-time world heavyweight king. Anthony Joshua certainly has an abundance of options, and is nowhere near done just yet.
Could AJ’s Next Fight Be Against Tyson Fury If ‘The Gypsy King’ Makes Retirement U-Turn?
In regards to the Anthony Joshua next fight, boxing fans are none the wiser as to who he will face. The Daniel Dubois rematch could happen, but it would have to be later in the year. The same could be said for an all-British heavyweight grudge match against Tyson Fury.
With Fury losing back-to-back fights to the great Oleksandr Usyk, an all-British showdown with Anthony Joshua seems closer than ever to being made. That was until ‘The Gypsy King’ announced his sudden retirement on 13th January.
Whether Fury stays true to his word and hangs his gloves up for good remains to be seen, but for now it seems the Fury vs Joshua fight most definitely won’t happen. Joshua will have to look elsewhere, with plenty of other options going forward in 2025 and beyond.
Zhilei Zhang, Agit Kabayel and Martin Bakole all deserve big fights after the runs they are on respectively, so perhaps one of those names could be stood in the opposite corner for AJ’s next fight. This is unless ‘AJ’ fights the Daniel Dubois vs Joseph Parker winner.
