Anthony James has sadly passed away just two days before his 78th birthday.

The award-winning actor was a well-known face in Hollywood, and was best known for his role in Clint Eastwood's 1992 Western film Unforgiven.

His cause of death is believed to be the cancer he had been battling, although no further details have yet been made public.

Anthony's acting career spanned more than 50 years and his impressive Hollywood resume saw him star in his breakthrough role at the age of 26 in 1967's The Heat of the Night.

The movie won Best Picture at the Academy Awards the following year.

Anthony's decades-long career also saw him star in movie Vanishing Point, High Plains Drifter and Tick, Tick, Tick.
