Anthony Hopkins slams Marvel films saying he hated filming Thor in front of green screen

Anthony Hopkins has slammed the Marvel films, saying he hated filming in front of a green screen.

The actor has opened up about his experience when he filmed the movies where he played Odin in 2011's Thor, 2013's Thor: The Dark World and 2017's Thor: Ragnarok.

However, it seems that his experience wasn't completely positive, despite saving him from retiring from the acting world.

In an interview the 85-year-old explained how he thinks it is "pointless acting" when actors are put in front of a green screen.

The interview comes soon after a first look of Those About To Die was released where Hopkins plays Roman Emperor Vespian.

Speaking to The New Yorker he said: "They put me in armor; they shoved a beard on me. Sit on the throne, shout a bit. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting it."

Anthony has explained in the past that he credits his role in Thor as saving his acting career as he was considering retirement at the time.

He revealed in the 2021 book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Thor director Kenneth Branagh gave him the encouragement he needed to continue acting.

He said: "Branagh gave me back the chops to work. I was gonna give it up, really. But you see, [Branagh] won't let you do that.

"Working with Ken was quite an injection of new energy into my life. He seems to have that same infectious quality on everybody in the crew."

Anthony added: "His enthusiasm, his attitude, is so positive, that he brings out the best in everybody."

It's thought that the actor's experience on the following Thor films got worse after the original as Branagh didn't return to direct 2013's Thor: The Dark World (directed by Alan Taylor) or 2017's Thor: Ragnarok (directed by Taika Waititi).

In terms of box office gross and critical acclaim, 2011's Thor and 2013's Thor: The Dark World were considered among the weakest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thor earned $181 million and Thor: The Dark World earned $206 million.
