Anthony Hopkins calls Ryan Reynolds 'honorary Welsh'

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has been called "honorary Welsh" by acting legend Sir Anthony Hopkins . The Oscar winner made the remarks after Wrexham returned to the Football League. After the team's promotion on Saturday, Reynolds said he "was somewhere between giggling and sobbing" after the team's promotion on Saturday, April 22.

The promotion has ended a 15-year non-league stint for the team. Reynolds celebrated on Twitter, writing: "Everything I own smells like champagne, beer and grass. I’m still somewhere between giggling and sobbing. This town and this sport is one of the most romantic things on earth. Thank you, @Wrexham_AFC."

Before the kick-off on Saturday, fans in a Wrexham pub were joined by some famous faces. Ant-Man actor Paul Rudd joined fans for some selfies at The Turf Pub, while film director Joe Russo - who has directed many Marvel films including Avengers and Captain America films - also joined in the fun.

Now, Sir Anthony Hopkins has shown his support for Reynolds on Twitter. In response to his tweet about the team's promotion, the actor, originally from Port Talbot, wrote: "You’re now an honorary Welsh boyo."

Praise has also come from Prince William, who wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations Wrexham AFC. A club with such amazing history, looking forward to a very exciting future back in the Football League. Doing Wales proud."

Wrexham has gained a number of famous fans, it seems, with actors Will Ferrell and Hugh Jackman also known to be fans of the club. Emma Corrin, who appeared as a young Princess Diana in The Crown, also showed their support for the team, turning up to watch a game earlier this month.

Following Saturday's game, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: "There's going to be a big party over the next few days in Wrexham. I want all the supporters who have had these tough times supporting the club to enjoy it."
