Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has urged Anthony Gordon to "bide his time" and wait for an England call up.
The Newcastle star is reportedly "wanted" by Steve Clarke to play for Scotland after he missed out on Gareth Southgate's latest squad.
Gordon born in Liverpool but qualifies through his grandparents, however, Agbonlahor feels the 22-year-old will get an opportunity eventually for the Three Lions.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "If you do play for Scotland, you've got to be 100 per cent in it.
"You're not just playing because you want to play international football. I could have, and if I'd chosen to play for Scotland I would have been 100 per cent there and in it with Scotland.
"I spoke to Ally McCoist about this and we had a laugh about it. The thing for me is that I was born in England. I could have played for Nigeria through my dad, but personally because I was born here, it was England for me.
"But maybe if I wasn't good enough as a Premier League player to play for England, I might have chosen Scotland.
"That might not sound great but that's happened to a lot of players who have played for Scotland in the last ten years.
"Do think Anthony Gordon is good enough to play for England? I do, yeah. I think he'll bide his time. I think he's very close to getting called up for England."
