Anthony Gordon transfer fee agreed between Everton and Newcastle United

Everton’s Anthony Gordon is closing in on a transfer to Newcastle United for a fee understood to be in the region of £45million.

The Blues valued the England Under-21 international at £60million and while the Magpies were unwilling to go above £40million, a compromise for a structured deal with incentives is now close to completion with the player expected to travel to the North East this weekend.

Everton’s search for a successor to Frank Lampard, with Sean Dyche’s appointment expected to be confirmed within 24 hours, should also enable Gordon’s exit to progress as the new Blues boss can identify potential incoming targets he wants to director of football Kevin Thelwell before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday.

Although Everton are understood to have planned to bring in two attacking players in January, no new faces have arrived to date and having been focusing on loans – with Arnaud Danjuma having been poised to sign before Tottenham Hotspur hijacked the deal – Gordon’s sale would increase their spending power while also necessitating the need for a potential replacement for him.

Newcastle United have been tight-lipped throughout the negotiation process but Gordon missed three consecutive days of training this week at Finch Farm under Leighton Baines and Paul Tait.

Tuesday’s absence was described by the club as ‘planned’ but no explanation has been given for the Kirkdale-born player’s no-shows on Wednesday and Thursday before he made it back in today.
