Anthony Gordon situation explained by Eddie Howe after angry reaction to being subbed

Eddie Howe has taken the sting out of any concerns between him and Anthony Gordon after the £45million man's emotional reaction to being taken off.

The half-time Newcastle substitute was substituted himself in second-half injury time over concerns on a knock. The pair were both smiling and had arms around each other minutes later despite Gordon's unhappy reaction to being taken off.

After the game Howe said: "From my side, there was 30 seconds left and he was down holding his ankle so I put an experienced player on the pitch. It is no reflection on his time on the pitch (to take him off)."

But the Newcastle boss did say that Gordon must learn to control his emotions. Speaking in his post-game press conference, Howe pointed to the player's passion.

Howe said: “I’ve got no problem. Anthony is passionate boy. He wants to do well, but there was seconds left on the clock and we wanted to get Matty on because Anthony was holding his ankle.

"He just needs to control his emotions in that moment, but there are no problems."

Gordon was introduced at half-time, along with Callum Wilson, and helped change the game as Newcastle came from a goal down to win 2-1. The victory means the Magpies are back into third place and still firmly in pole position for a Champions League spot.
