Anthony Gordon admits securing a top-four spot with Newcastle United would feel a 'little bit better' if it means finishing above Liverpool. The boyhood Everton fan sealed a January switch to St James' Park, and made his full debut in the defeat to Manchester City last weekend.
Newcastle currently sit sixth in the table, having only won once in the Premier League in 2023 so far. Eddie Howe's side have only been beaten by Liverpool and Manchester City in the top-flight, but are licking their wounds after three straight defeats including a heartbreaking loss in the Carabao Cup final to Manchester United.
The Magpies will look to return to winning ways when they host Wolves on Sunday afternoon, and know that victory would see them move into fifth spot following Liverpool's surprise defeat at Bournemouth. Gordon insists he does not need 'any more motivation' to help his new club qualify for the Champions League, but accepts the achievement will taste sweeter if it comes at the expense of the Reds.

He told the club's website: "I don't think I need any more motivation to make it to the Champions League! It's something I've dreamt of since I can remember. I don't need any extra motivation.
"Obviously if that happens and we beat them to it, it makes it a little bit better. But I don't need any more motivation."
Newcastle have only lost five matches all season, and saw a 17-match unbeaten run in the Premier League come to an end against Liverpool last month. Howe's side have struggled for goals in recent outings, but Gordon does not feel the team need to panic over their performances.
When asked if Newcastle can finish in the top four, Gordon answered: "Yes, we definitely can. If we continue to perform the way we are, obviously start scoring more goals, we definitely can.
"To get there, I just think we need to keep doing what we're doing, we're performing at a very high level. We've only been beaten by Liverpool and Man City, that's some going. We just need to keep performing and taking it hame by game.
