Anthony Gordon hasn't had time to show his worth says former Newcastle defender

Former Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique would like to see Anthony Gordon get more game time when he returns from injury. The England youth international made the £45million move to St. James' Park during the January transfer window as Eddie Howe continues his rebuild on Tyneside.

Both Howe and Newcastle's transfer supremo Dan Ashworth have hinted at more business being done in the summer transfer window, with Gordon the only big name signing in the winter window. Many had expected the Magpies to spend big again after splashing the cash in the 2021-22 winter window to stay in the top flight.

Like most new arrivals, Gordon has had limited game time since signing on the dotted line, in part due to dup ineligibility and recent ankle injury. The attacking midfielder has managed just 163 minutes since moving in January, but Enrique claims he's not had enough game time to show his worth.

"I want to see more of Anthony Gordon, I loved watching him at Everton," the former Magpies defender told DAZN Bet. "But he's not shown he's worth his price tag yet because he's not playing enough.

"He's only 22-years-old and a project. £45m is a big fee. This is however, the kind of fees for players at these ages now though, look at Alexander Isak, Newcastle paid £70m for him even though he scored six goals for Real Sociedad last season.

"I hope Gordon plays more in the team and shows that he suits the Newcastle style soon and proves his worth."
