United tried to sign Gordon last summer but he ended up staying on Merseyside, amid major interest from Chelsea as well.
Newcastle also remain in talks to sign young right-back Harrison Ashby with West Ham but are yet to agree a price for the player. Ashby's representatives are spending the weekend working on a possible second deal before deadline day.
