Anthony Elanga has last laugh with goal celebration after being hit in the head with coin

Anthony Elanga got the last laugh after he was hit in the head with a missile as he secured three points for Manchester United against Leeds United.

The Red Devils sealed a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Marcelo Bielsa's men at Elland Road.

United were seemingly cruising in the first half as Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes fired the visitors into a comfortable lead.

But Leeds came firing out the blocks in the second half and turned the game on its head as Rodrigo and Raphinha put the home side back on level terms.

United responded as Fred, who replaced Paul Pogba, fired a powerful strike past Illan Meslier at his near post to make it 3-2.

There were some unsavory scenes, however, as United celebrated the Brazilian's go-ahead goal.

Elanga, who was only on the field for three minutes, was struck with a coin by a Leeds fan as the rising star went down clutching his head.

Elanga was hurt by the object and received medical attention, although fortunately, he was able to continue.

And he provided the perfect response by sealing the victory in the 88th minute netting the fourth goal for Ralf Rangnick's men.

Fernandes set up Elanga who fired a low strike under Meslier as he wheeled away in delight.

He made sure to let the Leeds fans know about it as well as he 'shooshed' the Elland Road faithful putting his finger to his lips.

"They have made hard work of it but eventually their class has told," said United legend Gary Neville on commentary for Sky Sports.

On Elanga's goal, former England international Chris Waddle told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Another good goal. The standard of the goals has been brilliant.

"Fernandes with a little bit of skill, rolls it into Elanga's path and you'd expect him to finish that."

It was a feisty encounter as nine players were booked during the game, including six for Leeds.

Tempers flared towards the end of the match as players had to be separated after Raphinha tool exception to a challenge from Scott McTominay.

It was the first time Leeds hosted United at Elland Road in the Premier League - without Covid restrictions - since October 2003.

Discussing the rivalry between United and Leeds, Neville said: "When we went to play at Leeds, it was brutal.

"Probably more brutal than Liverpool in some ways. The rivalry between Liverpool and United is huge, but the Leeds-Manchester United rivalry is almost like a deep hatred.

“There’s a little bit of respect between Liverpool and Manchester.

"But with Leeds, it just felt like there was a real nastiness – like they would come on the pitch if they could, it was that type of feeling."
