Anthony Elanga breaks ranks to defend ‘inspirational’ Cristiano Ronaldo and agrees with young player criticism

Cristiano Ronaldo has been defended for his controversial remarks about Manchester United‘s young players by Anthony Elanga.

The Swedish winger, 20, could have felt singled out by the vetean after he claimed that today’s up-and-coming stars “have things more easily, they don't suffer - and don't care”.

The claim was one of several made by Ronaldo, whose contract United are now attempting to terminate as a result of his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan.

But Elanga has not only defended his teammate but even accepted that, himself not included, young players are often victims of “losing focus”.

When asked by Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet if he felt targeted by the remarks, he said: “Not so much. When we meet, he's still Cristiano Ronaldo to me.

“He is an inspiration not only to me but to all the young players at United.

“I think he said young players in general. We're a new generation but I'm always focused on what I'm doing.

“But I understand him. It's a lot of phones, a lot of technology and stuff like that.

“It's quite easy for young players to lose focus, but I've always been 100 per cent focused on what I'm doing. I think young players at United listen, but I understand what he means.”
