On Wednesday, Team USA basketball punched its ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Summer Olympics with a relatively easy win over South Sudan. It had squeaked past South Sudan nearly two weeks ago in an exhibition game, but now, it is starting to look like the squad people envisioned from the beginning.
In Wednesday’s game, head coach Steve Kerr benched Joel Embiid and placed Los Angeles Lakers superstar big man Anthony Davis in the starting lineup to replace Embiid. But Davis had to endure an injury scare when it looked like he had possibly hurt his ankle.
Fortunately, he said he was “100%” afterward.
USA's Anthony Davis said he was "100 percent" after appearing to tweak his ankle getting tangled up with former Lakers teammate Wenyen Gabriel.
Davis joked: "Wenyen being Wenyen. He's my guy. I was falling and he came down too and just kind of stepped on my foot."— Ben Golliver (@BenGolliver) July 31, 2024
Davis had eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal on Wednesday. Prior to being moved into the starting lineup, he had been a big spark plug off the bench.
Team USA will next face Puerto Rico in group play on Saturday.
