Anthony Daly pays emotional tribute to Tyrone hurler Damian Casey following tragic death

Anthony Daly has paid an emotional tribute to Tyrone hurler Damian Casey following the 29-year-old's tragic death in Spain.

Mr Casey was attending a friend’s wedding when he died in an incident in a swimming pool.

Speaking on RTE Two ahead of the All-Ireland quarter-final clash between Galway and Cork, Daly said: "Just incredible news to wake up to this morning. We live for days like this [All-Ireland quarter-finals] but the passing of Damian, the loss to his family, to Eoghan Ruadh - what a hurling club, a brilliant club in Tyrone, a football stronghold.

"He scored 14 points in Croke Park a few weeks ago and it's just such a loss.

"I think it puts everything into perspective really. These days are magnificent and we live for them, but when something like this [happens] it gives us a bit of wake up call. Life is fickle enough and it can be very cruel sometimes."

The Dungannon man played for Eoghan Ruadh GAA club and is regarded as one of the county’s best hurlers.

He was the talisman of the Tyrone side who clinched Nicky Rackard Cup honours with a 1-21 to 0-19 victory over Roscommon in Croke Park last month.

Tributes have been pouring in following his death.

Tyrone county board chairman Michael Kerr said: "This breaking news is beyond belief.

"Someone who brought honour, delight and simple, straightforward gladness to our whole county, and far beyond, is gone and it's so hard to take in."

Ulster University Gaelic Academy tweeted: "We are profoundly saddened to learn of the tragic death of Damian, esteemed graduate of UU and Fitzgibbon hurler.

"We extend our deepest sympathy and offer our sincere condolences to the entire family circle at this very sad time."

The Gaelic Players Association said: "Players across Ireland are devastated for the family and friends of Damian Casey and for all in Dungannon hurling club and Tyrone GAA.

"Damian stood out as a person and leader. On the pitch he was a magician of rare skill. He was one of us. He was among the best of us."
