Anthony Cunningham steps down as Roscommon boss after four seasons in charge

Anthony Cunningham has stepped down as manager of the Roscommon football team.

In a statement, Roscommon said Cunningham does not wish to be considered for a fifth year in the role.

Following his appointment back in November of 2018, Cunningham enjoyed a successful spell as manager, with Roscommon's Connacht success in 2019 proving to be the highlight of his reign.

They defeated Galway at Pearse Stadium that year to secure the Nestor Cup for the first time since 2017.

Cunningham also delivered two Allianz League Division Two titles while in charge of Roscommon, the latest of which came during this year's campaign - ensuring the Rossies will compete in the top tier in 2023.

Reacting to the news, Roscommon GAA chairperson Brian Carroll moved to thank Cunningham for his contributions.

He said: "I want to thank Anthony for everything he has done for Roscommon football over the last four years.

"Anthony gave it everything while manager and we had many memorable days along the journey.

"On behalf of everyone in Roscommon I want to thank Anthony and his management teams for all their efforts and work. Anthony is one of life's gentlemen and I wish him the very best of luck in the future".

Roscommon will now join the litany of counties on the lookout for a new manager as the shortlist process begins.
