This is all that remains of a well-known four-storey building in the heart of Swansea city centre which has been torn down. The Llys Dewi Sant building, located near the former St David's Shopping Centre, has been demolished to make way for regeneration works.
A few years back, the building provided housing for retired people - before they were moved to a new sheltered housing complex at the former Vetch Field football stadium - but it was used more recently as a site office for construction workers and staff involved in the development of the Copr Bay district and Swansea Arena.
The building has now been demolished and construction workers are set to begin redevelopment works very soon. Ultimately, the site will form part of the upcoming Swansea Central North development site which Swansea Council says will house "a new vibrant mix of offices, leisure and residential, linking the city centre to the Copr Bay arena and waterfront." It's hoped the Swansea Central North development site will encourage more people to live in the city centre and provide an "improved retail and leisure experience". Swansea Council also says the development aims to improve "the connection between the city centre and Swansea Bay", enhance the built environment of the city centre, and create "improved employment opportunities," potentially including a public sector hub.
Sharing a new photo of the demolished Llys Dewi Sant building, a spokesperson for Swansea Council said: "The site forms part of the overall Swansea Central North development site that will be redeveloped by regeneration specialists Urban Splash and Milligan. Once detailed proposals are in place for the overall Swansea Central North development site, plenty of opportunities will be made available for local residents and businesses to give feedback that will help shape final plans."
Leader of Swansea Council, Rob Stewart added: "The Swansea Central North development site in the area of the former St David’s Shopping Centre is one of many to be transformed by our long-term regeneration partners Urban Splash.
"The demolition of the former Llys Dewi Sant building was needed to prepare that overall site for redevelopment plans that will create more jobs and vibrancy as part of a new area that will better link areas like Oxford Street with the waterfront and our new Copr Bay district that includes Swansea Arena and the coastal park.
"As soon as these plans are ready in detail, they'll be available for residents and businesses to have their say on as the £1bn transformation of Swansea into the one of the UK’s best places to live, work, study and visit continues."
