Boris Johnson is said to have attended a “party” with No 10 staff during the first UK lockdown in May last year - and people are partly angry, partly exhausted.
The prime minister joined Downing Street officials for the apparent gathering, where he told one attendee they deserved a drink for “beating back” the virus, The Independent reported. The event in question is said to have been attended by 20 civil servants and advisers on May 15 inside No 10 and its garden.
At the time, Covid-19 rules prohibited people from different households from having large gatherings and restricted them to one-on-one meetings outdoors.
Furthermore, gatherings indoors were strictly forbidden.
Perhaps more frustrating is the fact that the alleged party took place on the same day then health secretary Matt Hancock held a televised press conference, where he pointed out the tragic 384 coronavirus deaths that had been recorded in the previous 24 hours.
He also noted a gentle easing of restrictions.
In a joint investigation by The Independent and The Guardian, sources claimed that staff who attended drank alcohol such as wine, beer, and cola mixed with spirits and ate pizza.
One source in attendance told the outlets that aides had planned in advance to stay on for drinks, feeling in need to celebrate as restrictions were loosened.
The prime minister is said to have been in attendance for around 15 minutes, where he apparently told an attendee inside they deserved their beverage for “beating back” the virus.
Just days earlier on May 10, Johnson addressed the nation’s increasing scrutiny on those who broke coronavirus safety rules. He is on the record for saying: “You must obey the rules on social distancing, and to enforce those rules we will increase the fines for the small minority who break them.”
The news only adds to the ongoing fury surrounding “partygate”, which was recently roasted by Line of Duty, and reached peak parody when Covid-themed quiz team names were revealed.
Online, people didn’t hold back from sharing their anger.
Cool, May 2020 when we were standing in the street shouting over towards my 83 year old mother and trying to stop my four year old giving her a cuddle, totally great time for a booze up. https://t.co/Cclc1mdWHP

I spent an agonizing 80 days alone. Didn’t see a friend or a loved one in real life because bubbles didn’t exist and IT WAS THE LAW. I loathe this government and all they stand for with every single fiber of my being. https://t.co/doZB6TZosw

11 days before this, I spent my 49th birthday on my own. Not even a bloody Zoom / Teams meet.#BorisMustGo https://t.co/Nmcw2kD0ix
But the general public is still expected to lockdown? Get outta here! https://t.co/mUMoPKxCRb

Parties when we were only allowed out of our homes for exercise? I don’t even think we were allowed to sit on park benches at that time 😩 https://t.co/hhSIyw0ctX

Angry tears right now. The arrogant disregard of it all. May 2020 was hell for so many. The vast majority of us stuck to the rules, key workers risked so much and worked so hard... #GTTO #JohnsonOutNow https://t.co/dUM6gAJQUS

Last year on my birthday (April) my parents came to my house. They stood at the top of the garden path and I stood at my front door.

Then I went inside on my own and cried. https://t.co/cJLpdQ2rAN
For reference, this happened around the same time i was sat outside a pub in the rain with one mate who was the only other person I’d seen that week. https://t.co/CBekiyAtKu

My daughter turned 7 in May 2020. She sat outside, wrapped up, i#as family took turns to come to the end of the drive with gifts. We even marked two metres out with tape so nosy neighbours wouldn’t report us. https://t.co/12J4zgsEzI

Well nothing really surprises any more does it? I’m sure it wasn’t a ‘party’ party, just a gathering of important business colleagues doing really important ‘stuff’ to protect us plebs. God, these gatherings make you thirsty don’t they? @BorisJohnson https://t.co/gvQFQgKIrJ

1 week after my Uncle died in a Care Home where he was supposed to be safe, Boris Johnson attended an illegal party in No.10.

Boris Johnson joined No 10 party during May 2020 lockdown, say sources https://t.co/uYIbkopR8G
In the past fortnight we've learned that Boris Johnson just fucking loves parties. He cannot wait to hold a party. I find them a massive hassle but he can't help it, he just wants to lay on a buffet, pour a few glasses of cava and stand in a room with acquaintances. https://t.co/qXfiPuxao2

Hannah Brady lost her father one day after this party:

"I remember 15 May 2020 very well. That’s because while Boris Johnson was at this party I was sitting in a hospital with my dad dying in intensive care.
We had to fight to see Dad and sat there for 5 hours with him." https://t.co/Pl0mhpyeYz
So it turns out Boris Johnson held his first illegal lockdown party in May 2020. Well done, Tory voters, the prime minister has been taking the piss out of you this whole time.

A No 10 spokesman said: “In the summer months Downing Street staff regularly use the garden for some meetings.
“On May 15 2020 the Prime Minister held a series of meetings throughout the afternoon, including briefly with the then health and care secretary and his team in the garden following a press conference.
“The Prime Minister went to his residence shortly after 7pm.
“A small number of staff required to be in work remained in the Downing Street garden for part of the afternoon and evening.”
The Independent reported that Hancock was present at one point during the event, according to a witness.
However, a spokesperson for Hancock denied the allegations and said: “Matt arrived at Downing Street at 4:43pm and gave the press conference that evening on lifting lockdown measures.
“After the press conference, which finished at approximately 5:53pm, Matt debriefed his own team, then went to the Downing Street garden to debrief the prime minister. He left Downing Street at 6:32pm and went back to the Department of Health and Social Care.”
