Another lay day called for WSL's Fiji Pro

Australian Ethan Ewing is clinging to fifth spot in the race to the WSL end-of-season finals. (HANDOUT/World Surf League)

The race to lock away a World Surf League finals berth will have to wait a little bit longer after the Fiji Pro was put on hold for a second consecutive day.

Poor conditions convinced organisers to call a lay day for Wednesday, with the next call to be made on Thursday morning.

When the event finally gets under way, the world's best surfers will be jostling to lock away a spot for the end-of-season finals.

Only the top five men and top five women will qualify for the WSL Finals at Lower Trestles in California, and Fiji is the last stop on tour before the title goes on the line.

Men's world No.1 John John Florence has already secured his berth, while second-ranked Griffin Colapinto, Australian Jack Robinson and Brazilian Italo Ferreira are well placed.

Australian Ethan Ewing is currently clinging to fifth spot, only marginally ahead of Yago Dora and Jordy Smith.

Three-time world champion Gabriel Medina is in eighth, but can gatecrash the top five with a big result in Fiji.

On the women's side, world No.1 Caitlin Simmers has already booked her spot for the finals, with Caroline Marks and Brisa Hennessy well placed.

Australian Molly Picklum is fourth, and needs a solid result in Fiji to hold off the chasing pack.

The current event marks the first Championship Tour stop in Fiji since 2017.

In another bonus for surfing in Fiji, Cloudbreak has already been announced as the location for next year's Finals.
