Anne Hathaway reveals fan favorite Princess Diaries scene wasn’t originally in the script

Anne Hathaway is looking back at her star-making role in The Princess Diaries - and particularly thinking about one moment that was instantly iconic, albeit unscripted.

In a new clip from ABC's special paying homage to director Garry Marshall (he also directed Pretty Woman, Beaches, Runaway Bride and many more movies), Hathaway talks about playing Mia Thermopolis.

In one scene, Mia and her friend Lily (played by Heather Matarazzo) are chatting on their high school's bleachers when Mia takes an unexpected tumble.

"We were filming in San Francisco, predictably it had rained," Hathaway explained. "We were outside, and we had to get the shot really fast because we were losing light. And we had to go on these bleachers and they did their best to wipe them down."

And in one take, she "turned really fast" and slipped. Marshall kept the scene in the film after it was such a "charming moment."

"Six months later it's in the trailer!" the actress exclaimed.

"One of the things that I love about Garry is that he was never afraid of the spontaneous moment. If it was good, it was in the movie. He didn't care where it came from, he didn't care what happened," the actress explained.

Julie Andrews also talks about her time with Marshall in The Happy Days Of Garry Marshall.

She said, "He was so sweetly curious," and explained that it was her idea that Genovia would be known for its pears and lace.

Another improv example is the truly iconic scene in Pretty Woman when Richard Gere snaps the necklace box shut on Julia Roberts' hand, which was also an improvised moment.

Marshall told Entertainment Tonight that it was originally a prank not meant to end up in the movie - Roberts had been out late partying and they wanted to wake her up.

"When she laughs, the whole world lights up", Marshall said of the scene, which was originally put in the gag reel.

This wasn't Hathaway's only self-quarantine Princess Diaries throwback moment. She also channeled Mia for the pillow challenge, when she recreated the movie's poster, complete with some brand new accessories.
