Annan Athletic winger reckons festive tipples will help in second half of season

Annan winger Chris Johnston reckons a few festive tipples can help them tackle the second half of the season.

He was in terrific form for the Galabankies as they crushed Albion Rovers 5-1 last Friday night in their League Two encounter before going into a mini hibernation until January 7 for their next game with Forfar.

Manager Peter Murphy has given the squad added time off to enjoy the New Year festivities before returning to training and Johnston said: “As long as the boys are professional and enjoy having a wee bevvy we know we still have work to do over the New Year and stay fit for the next game with Forfar.

“It is a bit of a break but we had 20 days break in between our win over East Fife and then playing again last Friday against Albion Rovers what with the weather and a postponement against Bonnyrigg Rose, so it’s no different to that really.

“The win over Albion was good especially after going in a goal down at half-time.

“We knew with the quality that we have that we could change it around and then needed to score early.”

Johnston scored one and set up three others in the five goal, second-half blitz of the Coatbridge side.

He added: “We knew we had to score early and that helped give us a boost.

“Now we have the break and while it is not ideal, everyone is in the same boat in our league when the weather gets worse.

“But we have managed to put in a few training sessions despite all that and you need to put in the good sessions because it is a tough league.

“The standard is good and always changing with the pyramid system allowing teams in like Cove Rangers, Kelty and Bonnyrigg in the past few seasons and you have seen what Cove and Kelty have achieved with their promotions.”
